Eighteen year-old American Allyson Felix ran 200 meters in 22.18 seconds at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece bringing her to a silver medal finish.
Some of us might find it hard to believe that Allyson describes the moment after the silver medal was hung around her neck as a “low point.” Like any Olympian, Allyson hoped for the gold. She didn’t do as well as she had wanted and it was a huge disappointment.
We are all too familiar with what disappointment feels like. It might be a job loss, a relationship breakdown or life just not turning out like we thought it would. “Gold at the Olympics…that would be really significant,” says Allyson.
But Allyson worked through her disappointment to realize that winning a medal was not the most significant thing. “You have to have this passion and you have to have a reason for doing what you’re doing. And there really has to be a purpose there. And I think that’s what drives success. I know that my talent is from God. And that’s my purpose. To run. Just to glorify Him.”
Have you ever been bitterly disappointed? Have you ever wondered what your real purpose is? A relationship with Jesus Christ does not protect you from ever being disappointed again. But it does put disappointment, and whatever else life brings along, into perspective.
Why not establish a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ? You can do that right now. The following is a suggested prayer:
Lord Jesus, I want to know You personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life to You and ask you to come in as my Saviour and Lord. Take control of my life. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be
If this prayer expresses the desire of your heart, pray it right now and Christ will come into your life as He promised. If you invited Jesus Christ into your life, thank God often that He is in your life, that He will never leave you and that you have eternal life. As you learn more about your relationship with God, and how much He loves you, you'll experience life to the fullest. We would love to pray for you and send you further information.
